When I was thinking about fun things I could plan to celebrate Ron’s winter birthday, I realized that I spend a lot of time on our morning walks – looking for whales, talking to Ron about whales, pointing out things that might be whales and/or logs. My love of marine biology is not hampered at all by my inability to identify most species.
Ron is mostly uninterested. Sometimes, to make me question the strength of our bond, he’ll say, in response to one of my theoretical sightings, look…there’s a seagull. And when I try to stop our walk to stand on the shore for merely 5 or 10 minutes, looking for breaching whales? Well, Ron has the nerve to keep on walking and leave me behind.
Just last week, after a few days of reported humpback whale sightings in our waterways, I hauled Ron down to the nearest good vantage point. I was feeling pretty hopeful about his enthusiasm/willingness to get in the car, because Ron grabbed our binoculars as we headed out the door.
He’s a whale watcher, after all!
Except he isn’t. He was “using” the binoculars, instead, to sit in the car and check out the various SUVs parked nearby.
You’re probably all wondering why, then, I chose whale watching for his birthday trip. You are in good company with Ron, who is equally baffled.
But off we go next week! We’re doing 1000 miles and 15 days on a bus with Road Scholar and 22 new friends. It’s not only whale watching – there’s a host of other activities that are of little interest to Ron: snorkeling, swimming, and a couple of cooking lessons.
I’ll talk to you in a week!

Try to go to Flora Farms for a meal while in Cabo San Lucas. It is just outside the city and an interesting location. I am still dreaming of the creative cocktail I had there.

Fellow whale lover here! Next time, ditch Ron and we can go! Have you taken the Victoria Clipper Orca whale watch? I did that and it was very good! Also, Maui from Dec to March also great whale watching. Well, since we will both be in Mexico, I will have to read your blog upon my return to find out if Ron enjoys himself at all!

Safe travels!!!! I’ll be waiting for a report on your trip as well since that’s on my plan for 2025. I’ve never done the Clipper for whale watching – only for the ride to Victoria – I’ll check it out for this summer:)
